Art Pops Up At 16th & South

Meei Ling Ng

Art exhibits have been a component of Bloktoberfest since the very first year, and we’re delighted to continue that tradition in 2011.

This year, we’re using two vacant storefronts on the southeast corner of 16th & South Streets to bring our guests a “pop-up” art gallery, featuring works created and curated by Kevin BroadMeei Ling Ng, and Paradigm Studio & Gallery.

The gallery will be open from noon - 8PM, and selected works will be on sale for those interested in bringing home festival souvenirs other than a hangover.

Family Fun at the Festival

This year’s festival will be featuring a variety of family-friendly activities between the hours of noon and 5PM, all centered on the 1600 block of South Street!

There will be face painters, a caricature artist, balloon artist and a magician who will be performing at 2PM on the stage close to 17th street . Face painters and balloon artists are on hand thanks to the good folks at Philly Face Painting.

We are also teaming up with the folks at Paradigm Gallery & Studio to have a children’s arts and craft area. From 12-3PM, Kids will be able to make halloween magnets, fall leaf paper windsocks, foam decorative bookmarks and lollipop ghosts.

All of this is free to enjoy.  Because the fest is more fun when the fam’s all there.

What’s New for Bloktoberfest 2011?

Maybe you’ve been to Bloktoberfest before.  Maybe this will be your first time.  Either way, here’s what you can expect on October 15th:

1) MORE BLOCKS

We’re shutting down three blocks of South Street, from Broad all the way up to 17th. With so much space to stretch out, we’re ready to declare this the Cadillac of block parties.

2) MORE BEER

Bloktoberfest has partnered with Philadelphia’s own Bella Vista Beer Distributors to bring you an unparalleled selection of craft beer by breweries from around the country.  The staff of Bella Vista will be delivering kegs direct from their warehouse at 11th and Fitzwater continuously throughout the day.

3) MORE FOOD

Bloktoberfest 2011 will feature the widest selection yet of incredible Philly eats. Restaurants all along the festival’s three blocks will be selling their delicacies curbside.  In addition, we’ll be supplementing the corridor’s resident kitchens with some of our favorite food trucks from across the city.

4) FAST SERVICE

From the moment you arrive all the way until you finish off that final beer, we’re instituting new systems to make sure you spend as little time standing in line and as much time out on the blocks enjoying friends, food, and music as possible.

5) STILL FREE TO ATTEND, STILL RAISING MONEY FOR GOOD CAUSES

Ok, so this isn’t exactly “new,” but it is something we’re mighty proud of.  Over the past two years, and with your help, Bloktoberfest has been able to have a truly profound impact on the South of South Neighborhood and Philadelphia as a whole.  For 2011, we’re excited to continue this tradition by committing our beer proceeds to support a variety of education initiatives tied to area schools and students.

So, whether you’re a craft beer aficionado with a powerful thirst, or just interested in enjoying a free, fun-filled day along one of Philly’s most iconic streetscapes, Bloktoberfest 2011 is shaping up to be a can’t-miss affair.  We sincerely hope you’ll join us.
